Virtual Petrographic Microscope (VPM)
Free standalone Windows and Mac desktop software for rock thin-section analysis without a physical petrographic microscope. Developed at Macquarie University. Features stage rotation, objective zoom, plane-polarised and crossed-polarised light switching, auto-scaling grid overlays and annotation tools. Published in Australian Journal of Earth Sciences, 61, 631–637 (2014).
A successor online tool — ImageMatrix — is now in development at Macquarie University for 2D image analysis.
