Geological Services

We offer contract field work, XRF, XRD and petrological analysis of rock and mineral samples particularly for the mining, petroleum, industrial minerals, environmental, health and safety industries. The following services are offered:

XRF is a non destructive elemental analysis technique. XRF has a detection limit of about 10ppm to 10000ppm (0.001 to 1%), depending on the composition and type of instrument. Prices are for basic elemental analysis with results given in percent of elements detected. We are unable to do some light elements (Be to K). XRF accuracy can vary upto 10%, but accuracy from 0.1% to 1% is more common. Sample sizes from 1mm to 30cm. Detectable elements are from Ti to U, depending on composition. The detectable range of my instrument is generally between 1%-99.99% for elements Ti-U.

Quantitative analysis for most jewellery and precious metal items. Gold jewellery, grains, nuggets and bar can be assayed for compositions from 1% to 99.99%. Similarly, silver, platinum and palladium jewellery can be assayed for compostions from 1% to 99.99%. A report is provided, giving elemental composition in percent, for example:

Au: 99.82%
Ag: 0.14%
Cu: 0.04%

with a chart showing element peaks.

I can also test minerals qualitatively for elements from Ti to U. For example, ore minerals such as galena, sphalerite, molybenite etc. Similarly, I can test metallic items for elements Ti to U to determine the type of metal.

Petrography is a microscopic technique for examining mineral samples to obtain information about their texture, structure and composition, usually for mining and exploration. Petrology is a wider study, encompassing chemical and field data, as well as petrographic data.
